Frequently asked questions
The questions travellers ask us most before renting a car in Mauritius.
Do I need an international driving licence to rent a car in Mauritius?
No. If your national driving licence is written in English or French, it is accepted in Mauritius for stays of up to one year β you do not need an international permit. If your licence is in another alphabet or language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, etc.), bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. You must have held your licence for at least one year.
Is airport pickup included in the price?
Yes. Delivery and collection at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport are free, whatever the time of your flight. We meet you personally in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name β there is no shuttle bus and no off-site depot.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Mauritius?
You must be at least 21 years old and have held your driving licence for at least one year. There is no young-driver surcharge with us.
Do you take a security deposit?
No. We do not hold a security deposit at all. You pay only if the car is returned damaged β and even then only for the damage itself, an amount the collision damage waiver reduces substantially if you take it.
Do I have to pay when I book?
A deposit of 25% of the total is paid online to secure the booking, and the remaining 75% is due when we hand over the car. Cancel within 48 hours of paying and you are refunded in full.
Which side of the road do you drive on in Mauritius?
Mauritius drives on the left, like the United Kingdom, and most of our cars are right-hand drive. Speed limits are 40β60 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on open roads and 110 km/h on the motorway. Roads are good, but watch for buses, dogs and sugar-cane lorries on rural roads.
Is insurance included?
Yes. Every rental includes comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage in the quoted price. We explain the excess clearly when you pick up the car, and taking the collision damage waiver reduces it substantially.
What is the fuel policy?
Full to full. You receive the car with a full tank and bring it back full. There is a petrol station a few minutes from the airport, and we will show you where it is.
Can two people drive the car?
Yes, and a second driver costs nothing extra. Just bring their licence when you collect the car so we can add them to the contract.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing β we track your flight using the flight number you give us when booking, and we wait. There is no late-arrival fee, even at three in the morning.
Do you provide baby and child seats?
Yes, on request and free of charge, subject to availability. Tell us the age of the child when you book so we can fit the right seat.
Can I take the car anywhere on the island?
Yes. Mileage is unlimited and the whole island is open to you, including the road to Chamarel and the south coast. We only ask that you avoid unsurfaced beach tracks, where the cars are not insured.
